(The Alternator)

I travel in darkness,
The long, lonely road
Reaching into the night,
Just one more star in the parade
of lights.

The warning, a dimming dashboard,
Headlights flare and then go dark,
A shuddering engine,
The fire in the cylinders,
for a moment,
extinguished,

Only to be rekindled in icy fear.
Four miles to home,
two miles to a phone.
I hope I have my Triple-A card.
Damn alternator.
